Do you have negative belief systems and are they stopping you from losing weight?

Can you 'think' yourself thin? Do visualisation exercises and positive affirmations work? What are negative belief systems?

I am sure you have heard about positive affirmations and positive self-talk before and maybe even visualisation exercises where you visualise yourself already having achieved your goal, whether that be having loads of energy, being a certain size/weight or being happier. But just why is it that these 'tools' get mentioned so often?
It's because, unfortunate that it is, many people are trapped by their negative belief systems and don't even realise it. Whether it is our upbringing, the people we surround ourselves with or just our 'nature', for some of us our day to day thought processes tend to be a bit (or a lot) on the negative side...it's the whole 'glass half full vs glass half empty'.
So why does this matter you might ask? Brilliant question!
Our minds, as intricately wired as they are, cannot actually tell the difference between what is real and what is imagined. That's why when you close your eyes, and picture your favourite food, how great it tastes, how wonderful the aromas are...your mouth starts to salivate. There is no food present, but simply by imagining it your body reacts accordingly.
The same effect happens with all of our thoughts, so if your goal is to lose weight and every morning you wake up with negative thoughts that contradict your goal, you are sending your brain mixed messages and will find it extremely difficult to achieve your goal. There are a few scientific reasons for this, which I won't go into this week. Suffice to say...you need to make sure that you can change your negative belief systems into positive ones!
